Establishment of Chairs for Hayek Studies at Russian Universities

Dear Colleagues,

Pursuant an understanding reached with the heads of some top-flight Moscow colleges and universities, the Hayek Foundation Moscow intends to establish "Chairs for Hayek Studies" there to help students acquire in-depth knowledge of the basics of classical liberalism and Hayek's seminal legacy. We believe the establishment of the Hayek Studies Chair would help shape within the Russian elites broad strata of citizens embracing market economy, rule of law, and civil society.

The most renowned Russian experts - economists, political scientists, and lawyers possessing the required knowledge and excellent qualifications - will be invited to teach these courses. At the same time, dear colleagues, we count on your assistance in setting up a chair for Hayek studies at an array of Russian universities. In particular, we would be most grateful if you could help us articulate a tentative one-year-long basic course curriculum as well as specific topics for lectures and practical classes to better embrace the whole spectrum of issues re: modern neo-liberalism in economics, politics and sociology.

Taking a long view, we'd want to use the Hayek Studies Chair as groundwork to build up a system of continuing education encompassing all the phases of learning from high school to post-graduate studies, to involve increasingly greater numbers of Russians in learning about liberalism and Hayek's legacy. We are convinced it would guarantee our nation's consistent advance toward freedom, opportunity, prosperity and civil society.

Please kindly forward your ideas on the chair for Hayek studies project to hayek@hayek.ru and heritage@clcp.ru.

Yours sincerely,
Yevgeny Volk
